Obama-Erdogan Phone Call
US President Barack Obama and his Turkish counterpart, Recep Tayyip Erdogan have discussed ways of strengthening co-operation to prevent foreign fighters from entering Syria through Turkey. Obama also expressed his condolences for the deaths of 32 people in a suicide bombing in Suruc . The Turkish government suspects ISIS was behind the attack. The US president also conveyed his condolences for the killing of two police officers in the province of Sanliurfa on Wednesday.
‘Unprecedented’ Assault on Al Zabadani
The UN envoy for Syria, Staffan de Mistura says that airstrikes by the Assad regime in Al Zabadani have caused "unprecedented levels of destruction.” The town is located in the region of Qalamoun near the Lebanese border. On Wednesday, the Syrian Army also dropped barrel bombs on the city. The Syrian army and Hezbollah began an offensive on July 3rd to drive opposition fighters out of Al Zabadani. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says there were “heavy casualties on both sides.”
Americans Protest Iran Deal
Organisers in New York say 10 thousand people marched in protest against the nuclear deal between six world powers and Iran. They demanded that Congress reject the agreement. They say it threatens Israel and global security. The Pew Research Center has conducted a poll that suggests that 79 percent of Americans are aware of the deal, and that 33 percent approve. On July 14th, negotiators agreed on limiting Iran’s nuclear programme in exchange for lifting sanctions.
Grenade Circus Attack
A grenade attack at a circus in Lima has wounded 11 people. Most of those injured were members of the audience. One performer was also hurt. Police are investigating whether the attack was caused by a dispute between local circuses or an ignored demand for extortion. Extortion in Peru has been on the rise in the past decade. The chief prosecutor of Peru reported over 15 hundred complaints of extortion in the first four months of this year.
