(30 Oct 2019) First Lady Melania Trump and Second Lady Karen Pence traveled to South Carolina Wednesday to learn about some of the military's emergency preparedness and humanitarian efforts.
Speaking to a crowd of several hundred service members gathered in a hangar at Joint Base Charleston, Mrs. Trump said the U.S. military "has never been stronger or more capable than it is now."
"Our nation will continue to stand strong in the face of any enemy," she said.
Earlier, Trump and Pence spent about half an hour being briefed by several branches of the military, whose officials described how they mobilize federal resources in advance of and in response to natural disasters.
Oftentimes, that means natural disasters in South Carolina, where the coast was evacuated earlier this year as Hurricane Dorian swirled in the Atlantic Ocean.
Skirting the Carolinas coast just after Labor Day, Dorian's high winds and rain spun off tornadoes that peeled away roofs and flipped recreational vehicles.
At an elementary school just off the base, Trump and Pence met with 5th grade students participating in the Red Cross Pillowcase Project, which helps children mentally and physically prepare for natural disasters.
This was Melania Trump's first visit to South Carolina since her husband, President Donald Trump, took office.
