Government has allocated 18-billion rand to improve socio-economic conditions of distressed mining communities across the country. This was announced by President Jacob Zuma. Poor wages for miners and their appalling living conditions have been identified as a key problems triggering violent protests in mining communities. Zuma says his government is accelerating the process of implementing some recommendations by the Farlam Commission of inquiry into the Marikana shootings.
