History of Taiwan:
After the Nationalists, led by Chiang Kai-Shek, was finished fighting Japan, the Communists, led by Mao Zedong, launched an insurgency against the Nationalists, leading up to the Chinese Civil War. Chiang Kai-Shek and the Nationalists lost the Chinese Civil War and had to retreat to an island called "Formosa," also known as Taiwan, while Mao Zedong and the Communists became stationed on mainland China. Chiang Kai-Shek and the nationalists were planning to relaunch at attack onto mainland China. However, the cold war led to a stand-off. Therefore, Chiang Kai-Shek and the Nationalists were not able to relaunch an attack on Mao Zedong and the Communists.
In the modern day, Taiwan formed into an independent democracy. However, the Chinese Communist Party is aggressively attempting to retake Taiwan (called "reunification" by the Chinese Communist Party), as retaking (or reunifying) Taiwan with mainland China would allow the Chinese Communist Party to further claim the South China Sea and the Taiwan Strait, which is rich in oil, natural gas, and fish. Moreover, reunifying Taiwan with mainland China would allow the Chinese Communist Party to further advance its military to neighboring countries, which includes U.S. allies.
As reunifying Taiwan would extremely benefit the Chinese Communist Party, talks of Taiwan Independence are censored and under the National Security Law, which could hold a maximum charge of life in prison.
The AUKUS Alliance between Australia, United Kingdom, and the United States have been formed in order to counter China's aggression towards Taiwan and in the South China Sea.
