The Republic of Turkey is not only gaining in political importance, but also in economic significance. Therefore, it seems all the more important to understand the background of Turkish economic policy and history. Together we will review Turkey's record of economic growth since 1950 and compare it with the records of countries of similar size in southern Europe and Middle East and discuss reasons why Turkey's economic record has not been stronger.
