BEHOLD THE FACE OF GOD | The Word Exposed with Cardinal Tagle (January 1, 2023)
The Gospel on the Solemnity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Mother of God recounts the visit of the shepherds to the newly born Jesus in Bethlehem. They found him with Mary and Joseph.
The shepherds proclaimed what had been announced to them by the angel: that the infant in swaddling clothes, lying in the manger, is Messiah and Lord.
Then the Gospel tells us: “All who heard it were amazed… and Mary kept all these things, reflecting on them in her heart.” The shepherds left “glorifying and praising God.” After this, in accordance with the Jewish tradition, Mary and Joseph had their child circumcised and named him “Jesus” which means “God saves.”
Today’s feast directs our attention to Mary, Mother of God. From her we learn that discipleship really requires reflection, obedience to God’s will, and participation in the community of believers. She pondered on the proclamation of the shepherds. She, together with Joseph, followed God’s word and observed the tradition as pious Jews. She always looked for the face of God.
