Sicilian Lemon Granita recipe! 🍋✨ What flavor should I make next?
This recipe will always remind me of my Nonno. ❤️ He used to watch me anytime my parents were busy growing up and I lived at his house with my family until I was 4. I’ll always remember making this recipe with him. It was one of the go-to treats we would make together. We would pick the lemons from his Sicilian lemon tree in the yard, make it in a bowl, and we had to keep going back to the freezer to scrape the granita over and over again, but it was well worth the wait!
This is the perfect treat for hot days! You gotta try it! ✨
Ingredients:
- 1 cup fresh squeezed lemon juice (1.5 if you want it more tart)
- 2.5 cups room temperature water
- 1 cup sugar
Preparation:
1. Add the sugar to a bowl and slowly whisk in the water, whisking for about 2 minutes to dissolve all of the sugar.
2. Combine the fresh squeezed lemon juice with the dissolved water and sugar mixture.
3. Add the lemon/water/sugar mixture to a shallow dish. Freeze for about an hour. Once it starts to freeze around the edges and is slushy in the center, use a fork to break up the ice crystals.
4. Add it back to the freezer for another hour, and scrape with a fork continuing to break up the ice crystals.
5. Repeat this process about 3-4 times, until the granita is light and fluffy. Enjoy!
This can be kept for about a month in an airtight container in the freezer. If the mixture isn’t fluffy anymore use a fork to scrape it again and it will be good as new! And if it’s too hard to scrape—let it sit at room temp for 5-10 minutes.
