With the government's decisions on fuel price revisions, reducing bus fares has become a distant dream for the people, Lanka Private Bus Owners' Association (LPBOA) Chairman Gemunu Wijerathne said.
Addressing the media, he stated that the public had hoped for a reduction in fuel prices following the administration of the new government.
"We expected fuel prices to decrease at the beginning of this new year, but that hope has now turned into a dream," he said.
"For bus fares to be reduced, the price of diesel needs to decrease by at least Rs. 30, as per the policy calculation.
"Additionally, not just fuel prices, but the costs of spare parts and other accessories must also decrease. The private bus service is currently in a critical situation. Consequently, bus fares may need to be increased significantly after July this year if we are unable to manage the expenses," he said.
Meanwhile he noted that the price of an ordinary brand-new bus has risen to Rs. 16 million, and the associated maintenance costs have also increased. This will inevitably contribute to the rise in bus fares.
