Australian Dendrobium kingianums, speciosums and delicatums are lithophytic and epiphytic orchids... they're basically opportunistic for wherever they can happily grow whether it's a tree or rock purely depends on the moisture, temperature and nutrients. They definitely don't like being over watered and yet they thrive where it's a bit damp. Valleys and rock faces that have a tiny bit of moving water can keep them quite happy... so, give them excellent drainage.
The gravel in the tray helps with humidity and they're up and out of the water as they would be on the rocks above a river in New South Wales, Australia.
Cheers
