ABSTRACT:
Founded in 1992 as a chapter of the American Medical Writers Association (AMWA), EMWA became independent from AMWA in 1997, and today numbers over 1000 members from 40 countries, including 12 outside Europe. A not-for-profit organisation, EMWA is run by and for its members, supported by a professional head office. Medical writers constitute the majority of EMWA’s membership, which is drawn from across the pharma industry and associated agency, publishing, academic and charitable sectors. Medical editors and translators are well represented. Two-third of the medical writer contingent are from the regulatory side, reflecting EMWA’s origins. However, a growing membership from the communications side is encouraged and welcome.
EMWA is unique among medical professional organisations in concentrating a much of its energies on producing and running a continuing professional development (CPD) programme at its twice-yearly conferences. The programme comprises numerous half-day workshops, taught by experts, across five topic streams, encompassing language and writing, medical communications and drug development. Attendees are required to complete homework assignments before and after the workshops to gain CPD credits, which then go towards foundation and advanced certificates. As well as training workshops, at the spring conference there are also seminars, special interest group meetings, and a one-day symposium on a hot-topic issue.
EMWA members receive the print journal, Medical Writing, four times a year, and can access up to 10 webinars each year on diverse topics. Benefits for freelancers include a free listing on the EMWA freelance directory, and discounts on insurance and books.
