Seafood is super quick and easy to prepare but needs to be washed and cleaned thoroughly before cooking.
How to Clean Mussels:
Remove the mussels from its package into a large dish filled with cold water. Add a bit of salt and soak for about fifteen minutes or so. Stir it around to loosen up any debris. Scrub each mussel with a hard bristled brush or new, rough sponge. All slime and dirt should be taken out and it should look shiny after scrubbing and feel smooth. Rinse out a few times to make sure all the sand is out. Remove the beards and barnacles by tugging and pulling it out. The mussels should be closed. Tap them if they’re open to see if they close, if not discard. Inspect each one and discard the broken or cracked ones as they may be spoiled. Keep them in water as you prepare the cooking ingredients. Try to cook them as soon as you buy them as they will be still alive. They can be stored in the refrigerator but not for too long as their quality may deteriorate and will influence the taste. Once cooked or boiled for a couple of minutes they should all be opened. Discard the closed ones as they may not be good. Always make sure to buy fresh seafood from a reputable, organic source. Seafood from contaminated waters can make you sick. Prepare as desired!
