Pope Francis has welcomed US President Barack Obama to the Vatican.
The two leaders have different views on many issues, for example, abortion rights and gay marriage, as well as unbridled capitalism and the growing gap between rich and poor.
But, they also have a lot in common, such as issues of poverty and social justice.
Obama has repeatedly praised Pope Francis for his compassion. The meeting could give momentum to some of the president's initiatives back in the United States, like boosting the middle class and helping low-income Americans succeed.
The US delegation is meeting with Italian political leaders during the afternoon, including Italian President Giorgio Napolitano and Prime Minister Matteo Renzi.
The US president will leave Italy on Friday for Saudi Arabia, his final stop on a week-long overseas trip.
