Do Not get a Medicare supplement PLAN G before you watch this video. Medigap Plan G can be more expensive than Plan N and HDG (High Deductible Plan G). This is because Plan G provides more comprehensive coverage than Plan N and HDG.
Plan G covers all of the same benefits as Plan N, but also Plan G also covers excess charges that may be incurred if a healthcare provider does not accept Medicare's approved amount as full payment.
Consider Your Healthcare Needs
Before committing to Plan G, take a close look at your healthcare needs and financial situation. Do you frequently visit out-of-network providers who may charge excess fees? If so, Plan G can be a lifesaver since it covers those excess charges that Plan N does not. However, if you mainly stick to Medicare-approved providers and are in good health, you may not need the extra coverage that Plan G offers.
For example, if you live in states like New York or Texas, where healthcare costs can be higher, Plan G may offer better peace of mind. But if you're in a state with lower costs and you don't expect to need a lot of healthcare services, another plan with a lower premium could save you money.
Compare Medicare Plans
One of the biggest mistakes people make is not comparing their options before enrolling in a Medicare Supplement plan. Medicare Plan G offers comprehensive coverage, but other plans like Plan N or High-Deductible Plan G may offer similar benefits at a lower cost, depending on your health needs. It's important to do a thorough Medicare plan comparison to understand how much each plan will cost you in terms of premiums, deductibles, and out-of-pocket expenses.
If you don’t plan on using many medical services, why pay extra for a plan you might not fully utilize? Comparing plans from various providers like AARP, United Healthcare, Aetna, and Cigna will give you a better sense of which plan offers the most value for your specific situation.
Hidden Costs of Plan G
Another factor to consider is that Plan G doesn’t eliminate all out-of-pocket costs. While it covers most expenses, you'll still need to pay the Medicare Part B deductible, which is a one-time annual payment. If your healthcare needs are minimal, that deductible might be the only cost you incur beyond your monthly premiums. However, if you're paying high premiums every month, those savings could quickly disappear if you rarely visit a doctor.
Additionally, Medicare Plan G does not include prescription drug coverage. So, if you need coverage for medications, you'll have to purchase a separate Medicare Part D plan, which can add to your overall healthcare costs.
