Many of my students say, Kathryn I’m always translating in my head to the point that when I’m speaking, I am slow, it takes me too long time find my words. I feel I’m always behind the conversation and not really present IN the conversation.
I know exactly how you feel because I was like this in French. I felt I was never fully ‘there’. There were too many steps involved between the processing, translation, thinking of vocabulary and then the speaking.
So try this technique I used to stop translating in your head
1. When you have 5 minutes to spare, just look around you. Your hands, your room, the sky, the buildings
2. Now became you start saying anything in your head in your native language - stop yourself. Stop formulating any sentence
Make that first thought be something in English. It doesn’t have to be a brilliant sentence. It can be simple - but the point is you’re training your brain to not default to your native language.
Try this for 5 minutes a day for one week. Get back to be to tell me how it went!
