100대기업 고용절벽현상: 1년새 7천명 넘게 감축
Korea's slowing economy is reflected on the jobs front.
The latest report released by the government shows bleak numbers.
And according to our Shin Se-min, it seems the trend is likely to continue.
The number of people working for the country's top-100 companies in sales has fallen over the past year.
According to data compiled by the Financial Supervisory Service and Chaebul-dot-com,... the firms had 861-thousand people working for them as of last September, down on year by more than seven-thousand,... or zero-point-8 percent.
The biggest job losses... came in the country's shipbuilding sector,... a main target of the government-led restructuring drive,... with three of the largest shipbuilders cutting over 68-hundred employees.
The number of workers at seven affiliates of Samsung Group fell by 12-thousand.
Korea's number-two tech firm, LG Electronics,... and its panelmaker LG Display... also cut staff by zero-point-6, and 1-point-1 percent respectively.
And there is concern that the jobs situation could be the same this year.
According to the Korea Employers Federation, nearly half of the the 259 businesses it surveyed said they would tighten operations this year... given harsh economic circumstances.
According to Statistics Korea, the overall unemployment rate last year was three-point-seven percent, the highest since 2010.
And the number of people looking for work had surpassed the one-million mark... for the first time on record.
