================ Places visited on this tour:
Belém Tower is a 16th-century fortification located in Lisbon. This monument was erected for the purpose of serving both as a gateway to the city of Lisbon and as a defense against possible invasions and attacks from the Tagus. This rampart was a strategic point also protecting the Jeronimos Monastery, which constituted strategic points to invade the city.
The Belém Tower was the first Portuguese fortification with two floors of firing positions, marking a new evolution of military architecture. The corners of this platform, as well as the top of the tower, are equipped with turrets surmounted by domes reminiscent of Moorish art.
Padrão dos Descobrimentos is a monument on the northern bank of the Tagus River estuary, in Lisbon. Located along the river where ships departed to explore and trade with India and the Orient, the monument celebrates the Portuguese Age of Discovery during the 15th and 16th centuries.
In the place where the Jerónimos Monastery stands today, next to the old beach of Belém, there was originally a small hermitage dedicated to Santa Maria that had been built by Infante D. Henrique, in 1452. In the beginning of the 16th century, D. Manuel I, having built a great monastery there, was recognized by the Holy See and was donated to the Order of the Friars of São Jerónimo. The epitome of Manueline architecture is intrinsically linked to the Discoveries and this monastery is the most remarkable Portuguese monastic complex of its time and one of the main European churches.
MAAT – Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology is the new cultural centre for Lisbon. It’s a museum where these three areas intertwine within a space of debate, discovery, critical thinking and international dialogue. It’s an innovative project which establishes a connection between the new building, designed by Amanda Levete Architects’ studio, and Central Tejo Power Station, one of Portugal’s most prominent examples of industrial architecture from the first half of the 20th century, and one of the most visited museums in the country.
The 25 de Abril Bridge is a road-rail suspension bridge over the Tagus River that connects the city of Lisbon to the city of Almada. The bridge crosses the Tagus estuary at the final and narrowest part — the so-called Tagus neck. The Bridge is 2277 meters long.
