Happy Luna New Year Soul Feeders!
(sing jear ou e, sing nine how chan)
I'm so excited to take you on a tour of Yaowarat, Bangkok's Chinatown in Thailand as we visit monumental locations and the best street food in the Chinese melting pot of Thailand.
The Tien Fa foundation was our first stop. The Tien Fa foundation hospital was formed in 1902, making it the oldest charitable society in Bangkok. The foundation provides free medical care to the indigent. The buildings surrounding the shrine actually house the hospital facilities. Kuan Im (or Guan Yin) is commonly referred to in English as the "Goddess of Mercy". The statue of Kuan Im on the altar at the Thien Fah foundation was carved in China from teak wood and is believed to be 800 to 900 years old. It was taken out of China and installed in the foundation in 1958.
The one street food not to miss in Yaowarat is the roasted chestnuts! It's hard to miss as it is lined up and down the streets. I never understood why there were so many chestnut sellers until I tried one and they are so tasty.
One of my favorite things to eat in Yaowarat is fresh seafood. It's so fresh as if you were eating it on the beach! I take you on taste of fresh oysters, tom yum soup, crab, shrimp, and seafood sauce. You can't have seafood in Thailand without thai style seafood sauce that is made of fresh lime juice, thai chilis, garlic, and a touch of salt. Everyone has their little twist on their sauce and that is how Thai's will pick their favorite seafood house.
Another delicacy of Yaowarat is Fish Maw, or fish stomach! I got to taste the most traditional way fish maw is served at a 90 year old street food stale that stays open 24/7. The owner is a lot of fun and his background will amaze you.
Last stop is at a Chinese Tea Stale. With so many choices from milk tea, green tea, jasmine tea, flower tea, and so many more to scoop up and take home. It was amazing day in Yaowarat!
I hope you will enjoy a part of my tour in Yaowarat! Stay Tuned for another episode next week.
In the meantime, if I got your mouth watering, come visit me if and when you are in dallas!
