Lipid bilayer composed only of 1,2-dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine membrane lipid. No fatty acyl tails are saturated. If 1,2-diarachidonoylphosphatidylcholine were added to the lipid bilayer, would membrane fluidity decrease, increase, or stay the same? The arachidonoyl groups possess four cis carbon-carbon double bonds. Why? The membrane transition temperature is the temperature at which it shifts from being stiff to being fluid. If cholesterol were added to the lipid bilayer at temperatures below the transition temperature, would membrane fluidity decrease or increase? Why? Suppose you were culturing a population of bacteria at 15°C and then raised the temperature of the culture to 37°C. What effect do you think this might have on the fatty acid composition of the cell membrane?
