The National Weather Service wants you to be aware of one of the most dangerous forms of winter weather; snow squalls. This is snow squall awareness week across the country.
Snow squalls are like blizzards on a small scale. Gusty winds and heavy snow create whiteout visibility and rapidly changing road conditions. Snow squalls can be life threatening because at highways speeds in those conditions, there is little to no time to react to an accident.
Snow squalls are difficult to predict more than a few hours ahead of time, but these scenarios are when they are most likely:
These bands of heavy snow form when there's the right combination of moisture and unstable air. Cold fronts and outbreaks of arctic air can create intense lines of heavy snow. After a winter storm has passed, cold air rushing in on the back side of the storm can also create unstable air and a favorable environment for snow bands.
If a snow squall is detected on radar and will impact a major road or roads, the National Weather Service will issue a Snow Squall Warning. If a Snow Squall Warning is issued, travel in the area is not recommended and could become dangerous quickly.
Severe snow squall warnings will appear on your phone automatically, but the 4 News Now Weather App will help you take care of the rest.
