SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) — A former Division of Child and Family Services (DCFS) worker is speaking out about systemic issues she believes are hindering Utah’s ability to protect children.
Her concerns come as public outcry grows following recent child abuse cases, including the tragic death of 12-year-old Gavin Peterson, who allegedly died of starvation at his West Haven home.
In an exclusive interview with 2News, the former caseworker, who asked to remain anonymous, shared that she left the agency after struggling with overwhelming caseloads and a culture of simply "checking boxes." We will refer to her as "Sarah" in this article.
Sarah explained that while she left DCFS on good terms — receiving a letter of recommendation calling her work "outstanding" and "exceptional" — she ultimately felt the system was failing both Utah families and caseworkers.
