A crumbling castle rises from a New York river—abandoned to time, but not forgotten.
Built in 1901 by Scottish immigrant Francis Bannerman VI as an explosives warehouse, this neo-Gothic fortress stored munitions for his war surplus business. Perched proudly on Pollepel Island like a sentry, it once boasted turrets, a drawbridge, and winding staircases.
But no kings or queens lived here—just a businessman whose legacy literally went up in flames. After a fire gutted the castle in 1969, it was left to deteriorate, the cost to salvage it too high.
Now, Bannerman Castle's collapsed walls and roofless towers remain, braving storms and sharks that swim in the waters below. Though it didn't fall heroically in battle, this ruined citadel still stands, a monument to faded glory and lost dreams. But I like to imagine new life within its ruins...
