Filter feeders like clams and oysters filter water in the lagoon to improve its clarity and keep sediments healthy. However, as the lagoon's water quality issues have increased filter feeders have disappeared from many areas due to stressors like prolonged algal blooms and poor water quality. It's important that we better understand the stressors that cause filter feeders to decline so we can maintain healthy oyster and clam populations and continue to benefit from their ability to filter water.
The vital signs wheel is the heart of Indian River Lagoon's Comprehensive Conservation & Management Plan (CCMP). It contains the 32 Action Plans that were developed to guide improvements to lagoon health.
