In a fight between Jack Dempsey Cichlid vs oscar fish, who would win? Northfin makes some of the highest quality foods. They are great for fish like these. The saying “you are what you eat” asleep applies to your fish. Spend a couple extra dollars. Here’s a link:

Maybe those are franchised stores with different policies? It would be great if I could track one down and see what their customers have said about it in our survey. Some real live testimonies would be fantastic. I've worked in a corporate store and in one of the larger franchises that has PSP stores and both just used cups.
Is this fin rot? He hasn’t been quite himself lately, not as active and likes to lay in the corner. We were away a lot this summer and I don’t think he got the care he needed from
The sitter. I’ve tested the water and it’s good and I added salts last weekend. He is still eating just fine.
Looks malnourished and in need of some good old fashioned love and attention. Something nice to eat as a treat and in future avoid leaving him with sitters that don't care for him. If parameters are fine I wouldn’t think fin rot. Looks more like a couple of fin tears. Anything even slightly sharp in the tank that could’ve ripped his fins on? He may also just be feeling a little down or lonely or even bored. Maybe add a new ornament or a moss ball to perk him up? Alternatively, you can move his decor around so it’s enough of a change that he can explore.
In regards to the fin tear (assuming that’s what it is), usually my bettas recover from those fast as long as the water parameters are pristine. I also add stress coat to help out and even big tears tend to completely heal in a week.
Also, fin tears can turn into rot. Even when humans get a small cut, it can easily get infected if not kept clean. The same goes for bettas with fin damage so be sure the water continues to be kept clean. Thank you. We moved his tank around this morning and added a new chest. Changed the filter and cleaned out the pump. I’ll get him some live food and hopefully he comes around.
Jack Dempsey vs Oscar fish. Is it a cycled tank? If it is then you don’t need to do so many water changes. If it’s not cycled then certainly regular water changes would be good. Algae doesn’t necessarily mean your tank is “dirty” - my tank grew algae like crazy once if finally cycled and I hated it.
Fin tears can also happen if he gets stuck against an internal filter if ones running in the aquarium i mean. Good advice from her. I have the fluval chi 5 gallon. It’s enclosed and super light flow. It’s. Cycled tank, he’s been in it almost a year and I cycled it for a week before we got him.
Tanks usually take longer than a week to cycle but if he’s been in it for a year it may have already cycled by now. I’m assuming the water parameters you got were ammonia and nitrite 0 and some nitrate? If so, then you don’t need to worry about frequent water changes. If you have any ammonia or nitrite then you don’t have a cycled tank and I would suggest regular changes while your betta is healing.
I just wanted to thank you all, with all the changes and suggestions. He’s thriving, fins are still shredded but I’m hoping they will start to heal now. He’s beck to being super active
