Municipal waste is a major problem in Jordan, due to population growth and the influx of Syrian refugees. On behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and the European Union, GIZ is supporting the Jordanian government in solid waste management. Irbid, Jordan’s second largest city, has taken successful measures at different levels to get its waste under control and even generate some benefits. GIZ provided training for mechanics and developed an operational plan to rationalise waste collection and management. A waste sorting facility was constructed were recyclables are sorted and organic waste is processed into high-quality compost. Dialogue sessions bring Syrian refugees and Jordanians together and promote mutual understand. All measures are complemented by a waste awareness campaign.
