In this video a completely disassembled Auxiliary Air Valve aka Zusatzluftschieber is used to show how it operates. Failure mechanisms and potential repair options are explained.
In the video I failed to explicitly mention what the fourth failure mode is. That would be the bimetallic strip not going all the way back to the left when cold, thereby leaving an opening that is too small for a cold start. Technically the valve still operates but the car starts hard.
That is why I am talking about "bending" at minute 6:05
