When an emergency overwhelms a country in Europe or beyond, the EU Civil Protection Mechanism steps in.
Following its activation, the Mechanism pools expertise, capacities of first responders, and relief items to ensure that assistance meets the needs of those affected.
Since its launch in 2001, the Mechanism has responded to over 650 worldwide requests for emergency assistance.
