First I will apologize for another long delay in uploading. This year has been extra stressful with work and other things so my free time to get out and film and edit videos has been affected more than I like. I am hoping that soon I can change this. I am also planning to film, if all goes according to plan, some substantially bigger and more detailed videos during my visit back to my old home state of Michigan in the US during September 2023. These will be more documentary in nature, specifically covering a key historical, and very remote, lighthouse far out in Lake Michigan where I will be spending 3 nights on! Stay tuned!
In this video we are exploring the Cathedral Caves, a very large coastal tidal cave located on the pristine Waipati beach, an undeveloped natural beach within The Catlins region along the southern edge of the South Island of New Zealand. This beach has only one access which is tightly controlled for safety reasons as access to the caves and most of the beach is only available during low tide. The access road has widely variable and limited opening hours as a result so any visitor needs to check the official website or local tide charts before driving to this remote location. From the parking area there is about a 15 minute walk through the scenic native forest down to the beach. During this visit I unfortunately arrived late in the opening hours so had to hurry this walk. To save time for the caves I skipped filming the forest part of the walk. In my haste when I arrived at the caves I forgot to change my GoPro settings to better handle the low light of the cave so unfortunately you will see some bad quality video for the time in the cave. I am planning to return sometime soon to walk farther down the beach as there are other smaller caves farther along the beach.
Come with me and lets escape the noise of life and go hiking in the wilderness. I am making these videos to do something creative and help in getting me back out hiking again. Also with sharing these to the world, it’s for the enjoyment of other people who are unable to visit or physically do these walks themselves and for those who just want to see a different part of the world in a quiet (mostly no talking) and relaxing manner.
