A man attacked passengers with an axe on a train in the German state of Bavaria on Monday evening, wounding a dozen people, several of them critically, a police spokesman said.

Local radio station Bayerischer Rundfunk said the attack happened near the city of Würzburg, about a hundred kilometres east of Frankfurt.

Several broadcasters said the assailant was shot dead but there was no immediate confirmation of this by police.
