When life became hard for 29-year-old Aisha Shemau Sumaila, going to Libya to hustle was seen as a way out. The mother of two was at crossroads after being saddled with the responsibilities of caring for her children since their father abandoned her. She knew she was going into prostitution but was not prepared for the hardship to be faced there.
Upon landing in Libya, she was kept in an underground prison and subjected to all forms of abuse. She spent months in prison where she and the other inmates were used to satisfy the carnal desire of the wardens.
When the opportunity came for her to be released, she took it and was deported to Nigeria. According to her, she felt it was much better to die in her mother's arms than to die in the prison.
