A Puerto Rican woman has made history as the first model with Down syndrome to appear in a Victoria's Secret campaign.
Jirau, 24, is one of 18 models chosen for its Love Cloud campaign, with the goal of being more inclusive.
They also featured Miriam Blanco, an actress and model with physical disabilities, openly transgender model, Victoria Sampaio, openly transgender model, and an accessories designer named Sylvia Buckler, who holds her pregnant belly in the ad.
Jirau began modeling in 2019. She walked in New York Fashion Week in 2020 for Marisa Santiago. She also recently signed a deal with L'Oreal but can't reveal the specifics saying, "It's a surprise."
Jirau says her next big dream is to work with designers in Europe and to dance with Jennifer Lopez and Bad Bunny.
Down syndrome is a genetic abnormality that causes developmental delays and medical conditions such as heart defects and respiratory and hearing problems.
According to the National Down Syndrome Society, about one in every 700 babies in the United States — or about 6,000 a year — is born with the condition, which results from a chromosomal irregularity.
