**** Description ****
In this video, I demonstrate how to build a voltage multiplier circuit using capacitors and diodes to convert 12V AC into 127V DC. Voltage multipliers are fascinating circuits that use a series of capacitors and diodes to increase voltage without the need for heavy transformers. They are commonly used in high-voltage, low-current applications.
Fundamentals of Voltage Multipliers:
The key principle behind a voltage multiplier is the ability to "stack" voltage by charging and discharging capacitors in stages. When an alternating current (AC) flows through the circuit, the diodes allow current to move in one direction, guiding it through the capacitors. During the positive half of the AC cycle, the capacitors are charged. On the negative half, the diodes direct the current to add the stored voltage of each capacitor in series, effectively boosting the output voltage with each stage of the circuit.
In my setup, which is based on a Cockcroft-Walton voltage multiplier, multiple stages of capacitors and diodes increase the input AC voltage (12V) to a much higher DC output (127V). The number of stages you include in the circuit determines the final output voltage. This method is efficient and eliminates the need for bulky transformers, making it ideal for compact, lightweight designs.
Applications:
Voltage multipliers are particularly useful when a compact and lightweight solution is needed to generate high voltages without bulky transformers. They are commonly found in devices like mosquito zappers, microwave ovens, X-ray machines, power supplies for industrial equipment, and various laboratory equipment requiring high voltage for testing or experimentation.
