We took the bus to Toledo from the Plaza Eliptica station in Madrid. It costs about 10 Euros per person for a return ticket which you can buy at a machine inside the station.
The buses to Toledo leave about every 30 minutes. There are direct buses which take about 1 hour and indirect buses that stop at smaller towns along the way and take about 1.5 hours.
Once you arrive at the bus station in Toledo, it's about a 12-minute walk to get to the old city, where the majority of the interesting sites and history are located. Toledo's old city is located up on a hill. You can reach the old city via a series of escalators so you don't have to climb up!
Toledo was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1986 for its extensive monumental and cultural heritage. It is known as the "City of the Three Cultures" because of the cultural influences of Christians, Muslims, and Jews reflected in its history. There are so many sites to see in Toledo's old city. We wandered around for many hours, meandering through narrow passageways and stumbling upon interesting things.
In hindsight, we probably should have gone on a tour to learn more about the city since we were there for such a short time. There are several tour options that you can book ahead of time.

We had an excellent lunch at a restaurant called Fábula Taberna. We highly recommend trying Carcamusas, a local dish of slow-cooked pork, white wine, and vegetables, that’s served with fresh bread. It's a Toledo specialty!
This was such a fun and easy day trip from Madrid! We would definitely recommend it.
