Posterior Tibial Tendon Dysfunction ( PTTD )
The tibialis posterior tendon is a large tendon that arises as a muscle on the inside of the calf and becomes a tendon around the inside of the ankle. The tendon is responsible for maintaining the arch of your foot and is susceptible to trauma and injury.
Posterior tibial tendon dysfunction ( PTTD ) is an over use of the posterior tibial tendon and usually presents with pain and swelling on the inside of the ankle. The posterior tibial tendon can stretch and elongate during walking or sports. Micro trauma and swelling of the tendon occurs usually as a result of overuse, damaging the tendon structure. This causes ankle weakness can cause a collapse of the arch and foot profile.
PTTD is the main cause of “adult acquired flat foot”.
