I had a question on my Facebook page from Tom about what items should be checked every time you use your tractor. Tom had an old 8N that had multiple issues and when he was done using it he'd have to turn the fuel off to avoid draining the tank out on the ground and disconnecting the battery to keep a slow voltage loss from killing the battery. He's upgraded now to a new tractor and wanted to know what he should be checking regularly to maintain it.
The short answer to that is to consult your owner's manual. It will have a guide for all practices to do each and every time you use your tractor. It will be a little different depending on the make and model. I thought this would be a good opportunity to talk about four areas that, if neglected, can cause a major breakdown, and on a new tractor, may not be covered under warranty.
The first is the obvious one. Lubrication. Check the oil every time you get on a tractor, even on a new tractor since there may be a little oil consumption while the rings seat. Also, any PTO-powered implement probably needs the U-joints greased every time you hook it up.
Second is good fuel. My last video showed my neighbor and I draining a gob of water out of his fuel bowl. Most tractors have a clear sump that you can look at to see if there's water in there. These new injection systems don't like water or contamination. You don't want to know how expensive it is for a rebuild if that happens.
Third is a clean flow of air to the engine. I don't pull my air filter out each time I use the tractor unless I'm in dusty conditions. Then you want to watch the intake system closely. You can "dust" a diesel engine easily if it starves for air.
Finally, check the radiator. A clogged radiator and resulting overheating is a good way to experience a major engine rebuild and we don't want that. Keep that radiator full of a good water/antifreeze mix and clear of debris at all times.
