Stamps had been my #1 hobby. I had been involved with stamps for several decades gathering a fair amount of experience which I am willing to share with you. All this came at a price and huge amounts of time with good decisions and also with not so good decisions. We just never finish learning this fascinating hobby.
I am not a space filler except when I was very very young. I found digging a little deeper was much more challenging and at the end usually more beneficial. My specialties were in varieties of all kinds and especially color varieties. But also of prime interest were covers.
But by doing this and doing it well it is essential to invest in good tools as you would for any other project : tongues,magnifiers,definitely a good, accurate and well detailed catalog,etc. !!!
Remember, "you only get out what you put in".
Be curious about the stamp you are looking at: front,back,perforation,color,watermark,plate flaw,etc.
Don't put it back until your curiosity is fully satisfied; if not then put it in a special place for further investigation later. Oh yes.....you are now into forensics. Believe me,when you discover your first better variety you will be thrilled and further encouraged to this most wonderful hobby. Pick a favorite area and go for it with gusto. Learn and make good deals.
