The Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) contains a comprehensive set of prohibitions on nuclear weapons activities, as well as provisions for the elimination of nuclear weapons and positive obligations on victim assistance and environmental remediation to address the catastrophic humanitarian consequences of nuclear weapon testing and use. The First Meeting of States Parties also mandated the creation of a Scientific Advisory Group (SAG) to advise States Parties and engage with the scientific community. The event introduces the recently formed Group, its mandate and planned work. It also explores how the respective mandates and technical expertise of the Vienna-based international organizations may be relevant for the TPNW implementation. The participants seek to identify potential areas for engagement between the SAG and the Vienna-based international organizations on technical issues.
