Writing an impartial review about a van you like is hard… but have you ever tried to be impartial about a van that outsells every other vehicle on the market?

It’s tricky… but that won’t stop Tom from giving the Ford Transit Custom a good going over in its very own Vanarama Road Test!
The Ford Transit Custom is instantly recognisable and subtle changes in its appearance are made at different trim levels – this one is a "Limited" trim level and has:
• Huge open chrome-trimmed grille,
• Powerful Euro6 2.0-litre EcoBlue engine – (great running costs),
• Powerful headlights & secondary lights,
• And a big quick clear windscreen.
Down the side of the vehicle we get a great glimpse of:
• Tough 16-inch alloy wheels,
• Body colour side mouldings,
• Body colour handles,
• And a great profile & looks - sportier than a medium van should look!
First impressions count – they always do – and the Ford Transit Custom has them… but let’s not go skin deep, let’s peel back the layers in the cabin and see what its packing.
The interior, like so much about the Transit Custom is where it shines:
• Really comfy driver seat with armrest – (8-way adjustable),
• Double passenger seats with ample legroom,
• And they are fully heated,
There is a lot of lighting options in here:
o Front of cabin,
o Back of cabin,
o Under the sun visors,
o And beverage holders – 9 of them!
Then there’s the steering wheel and dashboard which just look great, with not a single blank button in sight:
• Steering wheel is nice to use, very grippy,
• Great control clusters on wheel and stalks,
o Audio controls,
o Phone controls,
o Limiter and Cruise Control,
• Dashboard panel is nice and clear,
• Driver info screen in between Rev and Speedo.
Let’s move on to the excellent 8-inch touch screen system. This is Ford’s Sync 3 system with:
• DAB Radio,
• Voice Control,
• Apps aplenty,
• USB connectivity with iPod support,
• Remote Audio Controls,
• Four Front Speakers.
Then we move down to the climate controls:
• Air conditioning,
• Heated seat controls,
• Hazard lights,
• 12V socket,
Take in that leather-trimmed gear stick around the stalk and on the knob! It juts out, but not far enough to be a problem for the person in the middle. Below it is a great pop-out beverage holder.
Moving to the left of that we get to the passenger airbag with an on or off switch.
Then down to the glovebox – which is nice and roomy. Storage is something this vehicle excels at.
So, so far so good! The outside looks great and the cabin is one of the best and well thought out I’ve sat in to-date. Let’s get on the road!
• Powerful Euro6 2.0-litre EcoBlue engine – great running costs,
• A bit of suspension wobble when the van isn't loaded,
• Drive quality – comfort level is high,
• Visibility – over the controls and over the nose,
• Good looking vehicle – common sight,
• 6-speed gearbox – very tough and easy to use,
