1940s style dress 'look' from a matching top and skirt, made out of lightweight red linen. I'm really pleased with the 'Carmen' top and I love the way it looks with the matching skirt! The shirt was quite a lot of work as I didn't have a pattern that would work for what I had in my head. I used a few vintage retro patterns to get some ideas but in the end I drafted the pattern to create a wrap top bodice block with grown on (all-in-one) sleeves. I took 3 mockups to get the fit correct and avoid gaping or pulling across the bust area. I didn't make it any easier for myself as I added shoulder pleats and closed the top with buttons at the side fronts of the garment. I learnt quite a lot during this project - had a go at draping, and watched several videos from the Closet Historian to up my pattern drafting game:

I got there in the end and just have the Carmen Miranda jacket left to make for this vintage-inspired suit.
