Sometimes the only time you have available to fertilize the lawn comes between rain events when the lawn hasn't had the chance to dry out. Fertilizing the lawn in the rain (or when it's wet) is not the best idea but when it's your only choice then it's fine to apply...but only if you take enough care to do it safely.
In my lawn right now it's mid-Fall and I've seen a lot of wet days in the recent past and I have a lot of wet days in the 10-day forecast so getting my mid-Fall application means timing a light application just before an evening rain event.
For good measure I ran the sprinkler system briefly for all of my zones just after applications so that I didn't have fertilizer pellets sitting on my grass blades while I waited for the rain to start up again.
Generally a liquid fertilizer would be safer for application on a wet lawn due to it already being diluted in water but because it's mid-Fall this time I wanted to go with my granular Scotts Fall fertilizer which had a higher concentration of Potassium compared to the liquid I had on hand as an alternative. I feel like the NPK ratio on the Scott's would be better to put on the soil and in the lawn prior to winter than a product that was Nitrogen heavy.
