One of the key pledges made by the Siddaramaiah-led Congress administration prior to taking office will be fulfilled with the repeal of the Karnataka anti-conversion law. When he was the leader of the opposition in the legislative assembly, the chief minister had labelled the ordinance and later the law "diversionary tactics" from the BJP's corruption and poor governance. By claiming that the intent of such a statute was to frighten and harass minorities, Siddaramaiah turned it into an election issue. In the event that Congress was elected to power, he had vowed that the law would be repealed within a week or during the first assembly session. Prior to the state assembly elections, Siddaramaiah had focused on the hijab prohibition as another divisive topic, claiming that it was a premeditated measure to stop women from wearing them.
