IHRA: anti-Semitism, Holocaust denial and distortion
International Holocaust Remembrance Day commemorates the victims of the Holocaust around January 27. It was officially proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly on November 1, 2005. The resolution followed a special session held earlier that year during which the United Nations General Assembly marked the 60th anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi concentration camp at Auschwitz-Birkenau on January 27, 1945, and the end of the Holocaust.
On behalf of Library and Archives Canada and our partners, we invite you to a virtual commemoration of this important day.
This year’s program focuses on the work of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA), particularly its efforts to confront anti-Semitism, Holocaust denial and distortion.
Guest speakers:
Jody Spiegel, Director, Holocaust Survivor Memoirs Program, Azrieli Foundation
Ambassador Sabina Sparwasser, Ambassador of Germany to Canada
Ambassador Michaela Küchler, President, International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance
Professor Irwin Cotler, recently named by the Government of Canada as Canada’s special envoy on preserving Holocaust remembrance and combatting anti-Semitism
Professor Yehuda Bauer, Honorary Chair, International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance, and Professor Emeritus, History and Holocaust Studies, Hebrew University of Jerusalem
Library and Archives Canada will broadcast the event on its YouTube channels in English (with translation) and in French
This important commemoration is proudly hosted by Library and Archives Canada in partnership with the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs, the Jewish Federation of Ottawa, the Centre for Holocaust Education and Scholarship, the Wallenberg Citation Initiative, the Embassy of Israel, the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany and the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance.
