The Col. Ruckman Cabin was named after John W. Ruckman, who was commissioned Captain in the 127th Regiment of the 20th Brigade and 3rd Division of the Virginia Militia by Governor Henry A. Wise. On September17, 1858, Ruckman was promoted to Lieutenant colonel by Governor Henry A. Wise of Virginia.
During the Civil War, John's regiment served mostly in the capacity of road and bridge clearance, construction and repair.
Katherine Ruckman McClure Beard was the great granddaughter of John Wade and Margaret Ann Moore Ruckman. It is admirable that she should have the original home of her great grandparents preserved by her cousin Thomas Moses Moore Jr., now owner/operator of the Jeric Bed & Breakfast. The Cabin was moved from the Ruckman Homestead located in Mill Point to the Jerico Bed & Breakfast in 2004, and opened its doors to welcome its first guest on July 1, 2005.
