Hello all, this is just an unboxing video that I made to show you three very rare and beautifully fragrant plants that I purchased from Burncoose Nursery in Cornwall, UK: the Sweet Olive, Osmanthus fragrans; a very fragrant Rhododendron hybrid, Rhododendron fragrantissimum; and Magnolia (Michelia) figo, commonly known as Port Wine Magnolia, but also known as Banana Shrub.
Osmanthus fragrans, the Sweet Olive, also called Fragrant Olive, originates from Asia (Himalayas, Southern China, Taiwan, southern Japan and South-East Asia until Cambodia and Thailand). It is a tree up to 12 metres tall, and widely cultivated worldwide in temperate and subtropical countries for the fragrance of its flowers, that smell like apricots. The flower colour vary from white to yellow to orange: I wanted to buy both the white and the orange variety, but unfortunately only the white variety was available for purchase. Osmanthus fragrans is reported to be hardy in zones 8 to 10, so theoretically should could be grown in several areas of the UK, however I also read it is quite sensitive to frost, therefore at least for this year, I will overwinter it in a polytunnel in my allotment and see how it goes; if you would like to buy this species, here is the link, where you can find also some more information about this plant: [ Ссылка ] )
Rhododendron fragrantissimum is a hybrid between Rhododendron edgeworthii and Rhododendron formosum. It is reported to be one of the most fragrant rhododendrons, possibly the most fragrant, even if it is reported also that can be quite leggy in growth, and the flowers, white flushed with pink, can be easily damaged by adverse weather; however I like fragrant flowers so much, that really I couldn't miss the opportunity to buy what many considers to be the champion of scent among fragrant rhododendrons. It is hardy down to - 5 degrees Celsius, just below freezing, but considering that last year the temperature in winter fell down to - 7 degrees Celsius in the area of Kent where I live, I am keeping this plant protected in a poly-tunnel in my allotment. Magnolia (Michelia) figo is one of the most famous Magnolias for its fragrance; previously known as Michelia figo, it is a shrub growing up to 6 metres, not fully hardy in all areas of the UK, but can be grown outdoors in the milder and coastal areas of this country as well as other countries in USDA zones 8 -10. It produces cream to purple flowers, beautifully fragrant with a fruity scent, similar the smell of ripe bananas or pear drops, a kind of sweet that has flavour of pear and banana; if you would like to buy this species, here is the link, where you can find also some more information about this plant: [ Ссылка ] )
