Former Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad said that politics is not easy and one has to be ready even for death. Recalling his stint as Punjab in charge of Congress when militancy was at its peak in the state, he said, "You have to be ready to put your life on the line (in politics). When I went to Punjab in 1987 as Punjab in-charge, Rajiv Gandhi told me 'I had signed my death warrant'. He asked me - How long do you think you will manage? I replied - six months." He said that there were 26 attacks on him in four years by terrorists and he survived them all. He said that Beant Singh was also the target of terrorists, who was the Pradesh Congress Committee chief, and they didn't spare him even after he became Chief Minister.
