STORYLINE:
Peru's Congress on Wednesday rejected a bill to approve early elections for the second time in a week.
Lawmakers are facing calls to grant a new vote amid ongoing nationwide protests sparked by the ousting of former president Pedro Castillo.
Representatives had agreed to discuss the new proposal similar to one rejected the previous Friday, which led to unrest in Lima and the death of a demonstrator.
But Wednesday's bill was rejected by 68 votes to 54, with two abstentions.
The proposal supported elections in December, with President Dina Boluarte ending her term on April 2024 alongside Congress representatives.
Boluarte, who was appointed by lawmakers to succeed Castillo after he was impeached and arrested on December 7 for trying to dissolve the legislature, is currently scheduled to end her presidency on July 2026.
Protests also continued in Lima, with crowds carrying banners and flags through the city's streets.
At least 58 people have been killed across Peru since the start of the unrest.
