On this tutorial we will walk through:
1. How to enable bash(wind river linux) on NX-OS
2. How to enable IOx(Cent OS) guestshell on NX-OS
3. How to enable IOx(Cent OS) guestshell on IOS-XE
A big tip when you enable on-box linux....
🎥On-Box programability: Wind river Linux, CentOS Linux on Cisco NX-OS & IOS-XE devices
❓What is on-programmability on NX-OS and IOS-XE?
💡The fundamental purpose of on-box programbility to perform automation on the switch or router rather than from external end-point.
🎥In this video I discuss how to enable Linux features on all Cisco capable platforms such as IOS-XE and NX-OS.
To summerise there are two form of Linux on these devices:
📍NX- OS:
-Bash
Has a Embedded Linux kernel “wind river Linux”. Distribution This capability of nexus device is also known as “Open NX-OS”.
Cisco has exposed the kernel of the NX-OS this allows the Linux kernel to utilise the hardware directly.
-IOx
IOS Linux is a containerised centOS Linux distribution, it is marketed as an application hosting service on the edge. However it is a fully fledged Linux environment with package managment tools(e.g yum)
📍IOS-XE:
This platform is only capable of IOx containerised form of CentOS Linux. It is supported on the router platforms(e.g CSR v1000 and other NFV IOS-XE based devices)
On the phyiscal devices it’s supported on Cisco IOS-XE based platform devices such the Catalyst 9k and Catalyst 3k(limited functionality) switches.
