New Mokama Railway Bridge Project : Near to Completion.
Scope of the project
Doubling of Rampur Dumra – Tal – RajendraPul section with electrification including additional new bridge over river Ganga Between Rajendrapul and Hathidah stations in Danapur division of East central Railway.
Introduction & Overview
This section is an important and shortest link to eastern region states and railways will be able to enhance its earnings by capturing the road traffic of the RJO bridge and the adjacent areas. The doubling will increase the operational efficiency of the section and reduce pressure on the already overutilized existing single line and help in increasing the speed of goods traffic which stands at a minimal 14.38 km/hr in this section.
Existing rail cum Road bridge at Mokama has single line track and traffic utilization is around 150% resulting in traffic detention of around 45 minutes being faced by 50 pairs of passenger and goods trains each. The doubling will help in avoiding detention of passenger and goods trains on this route and reduce the constraint to goods interchange from ER to NER & vice versa.
The year of inclusion of this project was 2015-16 through pink Book item no: 53 of 2015-16. The DPR of the project was prepared by ECR with then anticipated cost of 1491.47 Cr. The project was then entrusted to IRCON by ECR dated 24.06.2016. Foundation stone of this project was laid on 12.03.2015 By Hon’ble Prime Minister Sh. Narendra Modi.
During finalization of the alignment detailed discussions were held, and conscious decision was taken to eliminate any surface crossings b/w tracks of DLI-HWH line by providing RORs to ensure smooth flow of uninterrupted traffic along both the traffic directions in line with the Ministry of Railways policy of eliminating level crossings.
To reduce the complexities of land acquisition in the south approaches of the bridge;1.5 Km of stretch on both HTZ-RDUM section and HTZ-TAL section were conceived as Elevated viaducts with ballasted deck. After all details were finalized and detailed estimate completed, a major portion of work was tendered through EPC mode.
This ambitious project consists of 1 mega bridge (1873 m long) over river ganga parallel (60 m upstream) to the existing iconic Rajendra Setu along with the north & south end approaches. The North Approach along with Rajendrapul Yards extends up to 3 Km towards Barauni and connects with the existing BJU line.
South end approaches consist of around 15 Km of high-rise embankments & elevated viaducts mostly lying in inundated tal region along the HTZ-Tal & HTZ-RDUM section along with necessary structures for drainage. Structures in the south end approaches consist of 3 RORs (all over PNBE-HWH line to avoid interruption of traffic on the main line). In addition, there are 2 ROBs provided for smooth passage of traffic on NH-80 and one RUB for uninterrupted road traffic on NH-31. 8 Minor bridges have also been provided to ensure necessary drainage.
All the four yards of Rajendrapul, Hathidah. Rampur Dumra & Tal have been modified to cater for the separate UP & DN movements.
On completion, this project would serve as a major lifeline for people of the region by ensuring connectivity between north & south Bihar, impacting lives of Millions of people & would reduce freight carrying times and costs aiding in revenue generation for railways and brining new economic opportunities to the region.
