This is a face milling operation, done to generate a flat surface, with a face milling cutter. The tool moves to the required depth on the part, and then moves across the whole area to be machined. It may be done at a single depth or multiple depths, depending on the amount of material to be removed. If the finish size and surface finish are closely controlled, the roughing is done with a finish allowance left over, and the finishing is done with a separate tool.
