Have you ever wondered if it's possible to DRIVE from Canada to the French Republic? No, I'm not talking about the linguistically French province of Quebec - I'm talking about the actual country of France. In this video, I show you how to do just that, as I travel by road and ferry to the small French overseas territory of Saint-Pierre & Miquelon, located just 15 kilometers off the coast of Newfoundland, Canada.
This French overseas territory is the last remaining vestige of what was once "New France" (the rest of which has long since been annexed by what is today the nation of Canada). Sure, there are some French colonies in the Caribbean, but none of these are older or more historic than this original slice of the "New World" claimed during the French conquest of North America led by Jacques Cartier back in the early 16th century.
In this video, I'll show you how to get to this remote French archipelago by public transportation, either from the capital of St. John's, Newfoundland, or from the Argentia ferry terminal if you're coming from Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. Once you reach the village of Fortune, Newfoundland, the archipelago of St.-Pierre & Miquelon is within your reach, with daily ferry service to and from Canada for a mere 45 Euros one way, or 70 Euros round trip.
This was quite the adventure for me, as being a Canadian I've long been fascinated with this tiny French territory appearing on maps of our country. If you ever have the opportunity to visit this slice of France in North America, DO IT! It's an incredible place.
