Martha Hennesy, Kings Bay Plowshares 7 co-defendant and granddaughter of Dorothy Day, speaking in Brunswick, GA, admits that in the midst of the fear that she experienced during the action "what gave me courage was knowing that this is what the world needed and this is what God wanted." For her, our impending climate disaster and the threat of nuclear annihilation are issues which are "inextricably linked."
Nearly 100 supporters of the Kings Bay Plowshares 7 gathered on August 6-9 in Southeast Georgia to fast and vigil at the Kings Bay Naval Submarine Base. The base is home to 6 US Trident nuclear submarines and services 4 others from Britain. On August 7th, the KBP7 codefendants and their attorneys argued against the dismissal of pre-trial motions using RFRA (Religious Freedom Restoration Act) before a Federal judge in Brunswick. They stressed the omnicidal capacity of the Trident Fleet and the clear necessity of sacramental action. On-site supporters included actor/activist Martin Sheen; large numbers followed the events from elsewhere in the U.S., simultaneously observing the 74th Anniversary of the US bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Judge Lisa Godbey Wood set the trial date, starting with jury selection on Oct. 21, 2019.
